Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is the branch of medicine in charge of the diagnosis, treatment, care, surgery, and rehabilitation of diseases that attack the nervous system, including those diseases that are not generated from the nervous system but can affect it. 

The nervous system is comprised of two main parts: 

  • Central Nervous System. It is composed of the brain and spinal cord. 
  • Peripheral Nervous System. The somatic and autonomous nervous system composes it. The somatic ns is a net of nerve fibers that gather sensory information from the body's organs; for example, it tells the body when grabbing something hot that we should pull away. The second system refers to the fibrous nerve net that coordinates unconscious body function, such as the digestion process or our heartbeat.

Neuro-surgery is such a significant branch of medicine. An exciting area of the specialty it a technique called "Stereotaxy." The term "stereotactic" refers to the use of a three-dimensional coordinate system combined with an imaging technique, such as computed tomography (CT) scanning or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to precisely locate targets deep within the brain.
