Emergency Medicine is one of the most demanding of Medicine, since it acts as its name indicates, on a medical emergency, which generally occurs suddenly, and which poses a serious threat to the integrity or life of a patient.
The response to the emergency is based on the situation the patient is experiencing at the time; In principle, if the event occurs outside of a hospital environment, Emergency Medicine includes the first response force, known as “Paramedics”, who, supported by an Ambulatory Care Team (land, air or naval), respond to provide the first aid and vital support required, and, if necessary, escalate to the next level of assistance, in a Hospital direct to the Emergency area.
In the second level of care, there are Emergency Physicians: Doctors with a high degree of academic and practical training, which allows them to stabilize, identify, attend and, if necessary, refer to other specialist doctors to attend to the underlying causes that caused the serious episode. Supporting the specialists, there is also a team of nurses who, in the same way, are trained to respond to life-or-death situations.
All hospital emergency rooms around the world handle the same advanced life support protocol where the priority is to maintain the chain of life, which is made up of maintaining 3 points in the patient: vital signs, respiration and pulse.
The attention of the emergency area recognizes as a priority the time in which care is provided to the patient so they apply the intervention protocol known as TRIAGE, which is nothing but an evaluation scale where, depending on certain factors such as:
The priority of care is determined, giving preference to those in whom a delay represents a risk of life, or in cases of massive accidents, priority of care to those who have a greater chance of survival.
This last point is important to keep in mind as the general public, since the Emergency area often substitutes the function of a General Medicine consultation for cases that appear suddenly after-hours, or for accidents or conditions that generate an unexpected response, but that do not compromise the integrity of the person. We must be sensitive to the importance of the area and give it due respect, aware of its role.
