Plastic, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery

"Beauty is the aesthetic expression of love."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

In general, Plastic Surgery is a surgical medical specialty that aims to correct and/or improve the physiognomy of a patient. It seeks to correct congenital disabilities, injuries caused by trauma, repair functionality, or improve aesthetic beauty.

For its management, this specialty has been divided into two fields of action.

  • Reconstructive or restorative. Understanding that its execution is specifically managed to treat, conceal or reduce the disfiguring effects caused by trauma, congenital deformations, ailments, tumor removals, amputations, or the like.
  • Aesthetics or cosmetics. It is carried out to modify the patient's physiognomy to their liking.

It is often possible that both fields can be combined, where reconstructive surgery is sought, taking into account the aesthetic part, for example, a septorhinoplasty where the external shape of the nose is repaired while its functionality is improved.

There is also a subspecialty known as "Longevity Surgery", with an approach directed towards adult patients to preserve a quality of life, with health and beauty, attending to the functions that by nature diminish.

An evaluation of the surgery is essential to maintain the health of the organs being manipulated.

In this specialty, a prepared and ethical doctor must study all aspects of the surgery. Due to its high diffusion in society, some doctors neglect the functionality, including people without medical training and only with beautician management.

Some of the procedures that can be performed are:

  • Abdominoplasty
  • Bichectomy
  • Blepharoplasties
  • Breast implants
  • Liposculpture
  • Liposuction
  • Congenital facial malformations (ex, cleft lip surgery)
  • Mastopexy
  • Reconstruction of facial fractures
  • Reconstruction of skin and nerve structures
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Rhytidectomy
  • Vaginoplasty
