Start Your Breast Milk Stash

30/07/2025 Gynecology

Thinking about starting your milk stash, but don’t know where to begin?

Feeling like you should be freezing bottles by the dozen... and instead you're staring at an ounce or two?

Let us tell you something important:
Building a breast milk stash isn’t about quantity. It’s about intention, consistency, and self-kindness.

Here’s how to get started—realistically, gently, and without guilt.

What’s a Breast Milk Stash?

A breast milk stash is a collection of pumped milk stored for later use—especially helpful when you go back to work, travel, or simply need a break.

But no, you don’t need a freezer full of 100 oz to be “doing it right.”

It’s not about having “enough.” It’s about having options.

Realistic Tips for Starting Your Stash

📅 1. Start after your baby is 4 weeks old

This helps avoid interfering with the natural rhythm of your direct breastfeeding and milk supply.

🎯 2. Set a goal date

Try to start building your stash at least 20 days before you’ll need it. This gives your body time to adapt.

🍼 3. Choose the right pump

Double electric pumps save time and help stimulate both breasts equally. Invest in one that works with your routine.

4. Pump between feedings

Aim to pump about an hour after breastfeeding—or an hour before the next feeding—so you don’t disrupt direct nursing.

💆‍♀️ 5. Massage your breasts before pumping

This helps stimulate milk letdown and makes the session more efficient and comfortable.

6. Try 15-minute sessions per breast

If you’re short on time, shorter but more frequent sessions can also work.

🔖 7. Label and refrigerate every bottle or bag

Write the date and time on each one. This keeps your stash organized and ensures you're using milk before it expires.

🔁 8. Be consistent. Routine is everything.

Milk volume increases gradually, not overnight. Stick with it—your body learns and adapts over time.

It’s Not About Volume—It’s About Intention

You don’t need to “fill the freezer” to be successful.

What matters most is that you’re creating a system that works for you and your baby. A system that supports your breastfeeding journey, not one that adds more stress.

You’re doing this out of love, care, and commitment—and that’s what counts.
